Welcome to Chapel House Barn
Providing a two bedroomed unit in the barn was always part of our plan. We have children and grandchildren who all live some distance from us, and we wanted to have enough accommodation for them all to come and stay. Offering it for others to use was something friends in the village encouraged us to do and we have been overwhelmed by enquiries and bookings since we placed it on Airbnb.
If there is anything which we need to provide or is not quite right, please use the suggestions book or tell us when you see us. We have rented other people’s properties, but we have no experience of doing it ourselves. We want the barn to be a place where people feel they can relax, be comfortable and have everything they need.
Please feel free to use out garden and explore the river and islands. If you have young children we are happy for them to play in the garden but please either supervise them and/or make them aware that there is a river and water brings it dangers.
Chapel House was built over 350 years ago. The present house has Victorian, twentieth and twenty first century additions. We believe it was built by a clergyman; until the new St John’s Church was built in 1907, there was a Chapel in the centre of the graveyard which served as the village church; it was demolished in the 1930’s. We know that one owner had links with the West Indies and the slave trade. At the beginning of the 20th century it was a chicken farm. The barn is Victorian and had the remnants of stables and a hay loft. We have done our best to use material from the original structure whilst having to meet modern building regulations.

There are several food places, coffee bars, and shops on the University Campus (10 min walk turn right – parking is free after 1800)
Walks from Chapel House
The red walk takes you out of the back of the graveyard over the style under the motorway and out on to Kit Brow Lane. If you turn right you come past Cockshades Wood which has a number of public footpaths or you can come down the hill and back to Chapel House.
The blue route takes you to the stepping stones across the Conder River. Turn right out of the house to the top of the road and turn right. After you have gone under the motorway turn right. This will take you past some farmhouses and back, via the stepping stones, to the road. Turn irght onto the road and come back round into the village. There are a number of public rights of way you can explore. You can of course go the other way round
The Lancaster Canal is very close. There are many ways to get to it. If you turn right out of the house at the top of the road you can go onto the University Campus. There is a woodland walk which is very nice. To get to the canal or head across the campus then you can go down the main drive and across the A6 and over the railway. When you meet Highland Brow you turn left and first right and you will come to the canal. You can walk along the canal back to the village
The canal offers walks to Lancaster and Glasson Dock. If you drive to Conder Green you can walk along the river form the car park there is also a nice cafe.

As well as giving the address Chapel House, Chapel Lane, Ellel LA2 0PW we usually tell them we are the White House next to the graveyard by the bridge over the Conder.

Lancaster Castle – http://www.lancastercastle.com/ is almost 1000 years old. For much of its history it was a prison. It held many famous trials including the Pendle Witch trials. It is also technically a royal household as the Queen is the Duke of Lancaster but it has never been lived in by a monarch -
